New Data Suggests Type of Anticoagulant Affects Cord Blood Viability During Transport 
January 2012 – Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a valuable source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation and regenerative medicine applications, but few studies have evaluated the optimal anticoagulant for collection and transportation of cord blood. A poster presented at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting compared the cell characteristics of cord blood units preserved for transportation with one of two commonly used anticoagulants.

First Use of Cord Tissue in Humans 
September 2011 – The first reported human clinical use of cord tissue mesenchymal stem cells revealed them to be feasible, safe, and effective in treating a potentially fatal complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
