Brain-Cell Breakthrough

SCIENTISTS yesterday claimed they had created the world"s first brain tissue made from human stem cells.
Stem Cell Sciences plc (SCS) of Edinburgh have gained one of the first licences in the UK to carry out medical experiments with embryonic nerve stem cells - integral to the brain and central nervous system.
The newly-created cells should eventually help scientists grow replacement brain tissue for people with Alzheimer"s and Parkinson"s disease.
Chief science officer of SCS, Dr Tim Allsopp, said: "The remarkable stability and purity of the cells is something unique in the field of tissue stem cells and a great step forward
