Stem Cell Research Center to be Set Up On Jeju Island
Yonhap English News 04 June 2005
JEJU, South Korea, June 4 (Yonhap) -- The Jeju municipal government plans to establish a new stem cell research center in Jeju Island, officials at the regional government said Saturday.
The municipal government and the Medical Research Center of Jeju University have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding next week with the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) on the establishment.
Completion of the construction, into which the regional government plans to invest 10 billion won (US$10 million), is scheduled for 2010. It will facilitate safety, evaluation, clinical and surgical test equipment and human resources designated specifically for stem cell research.
"Jeju Island will grab the world's attention by setting up a research institution and medical facility on stem cells," said Lee Bong-hee, head of the KBSI.
South Korea's stem cell advances made headlines across the world last month when Hwang Woo-suk, a South Korean scientist, announced that his research team created the first embryonic stem cells that genetically match those of injured or sick patients.
